As a Drywall Finisher on a construction project, you are responsible for completing the drywall for the next step of construction. After the Drywall Hangers finish their job, you take over, sealing the seams between the panels with a drywall compound, and smoothing out all of the lumps and bumps on all of the surfaces.
Drywall Finishers are also responsible for smoothing rough edges around socket and fixture openings, and trimming edges around the wallboard to maintain even joints. Additionally, Drywall Finishers seal the joints between the ceiling and wall tiles.
You coordinate your work with the Drywall Hangers so you can complete the project together, on time. Your main goal is to ready the drywall for primer and paint. Nail holes, indentations, and marks, will all be leveled off by your handiwork, and pave the way for a fresh coat of paint.
You may also be asked to help with the addition of trim, chair rails, and wainscoting, before the primer and paint goes up. Your hard day’s work is immediately apparent through a completed wall, a completed room, a completed level of rooms, and eventually an entire building.
To do all this, you’ll need math and geometry skills. If you have these skills, and also love being part of a team with a common goal, as well as enjoy working with your hands, construction could be a great occupation choice.
