Diagnostic Imaging Directors use a variety of tools to diagnose disease and illness. As Diagnostic Imaging Director, you manage the imaging department. Your focus is on providing quality care to your patients. With that goal in mind, you evaluate current equipment usage, ensure that Technicians and other medical staff follow proper procedures, and look for areas to improve.

Diagnostic Imaging Directors hire, train and monitor staff that is empathetic to the patient’s fears as well as knowledgeable about the equipment. While you perform these standard managerial tasks, you also work within budget to acquire machines for your department.

Some of the machines in your department include PET scanners, x-rays, and ultrasounds. The diagnostic imaging department works in close conjunction with the laboratory, which processes urine and blood work. The results from the two departments generate a picture of the patient’s health from the inside out. This information is used to diagnose tumors, broken bones, clogged arteries, and many, many other ailments. And it is all done without cutting the patient open.

The high-tech atmosphere of this job requires constant education. Technology changes quickly and you are responsible for up-to-the-minute knowledge. Because of this, you attend seminars and informational presentations. Armed with this information, you instruct your staff and monitor their proper use of the equipment. You are the point person when the machines have problems and supervise the cleaning and maintenance schedule.
