Many products go through the design phase before hitting the production line. For example, clothing and toys are merely ideas before being brought to life through computer-aided design (CAD) software or a set of schematics etched out on graph paper. While Designers in every industry work to get the details right, they rely heavily on the skills and knowledge of their Design Assistants to turn ideas into reality.

As a Design Assistant, you make decisions every day. When should I have the supplies delivered? Which project takes priority? What materials would be best for the job? But the most difficult decision you might ever make is which sector of design you should aim your talents.

There are many industries that rely on the design department. In any of those industries, your job is to support the Designer. That might mean completing office tasks, like returning phone calls or ordering supplies. It might also mean picking up food from the Caterer for a marketing event, or approving final design plans.

Your duties as a Design Assistant depend heavily on your employer. For example, as a Graphics Design Assistant, you might help with mock-up advertisements, posters, brochures, or menus. As a Fashion Design Assistant, you might create and cut out patterns, or supervise Dressmakers during the sewing stage.

As a Sports Marketing Design Assistant, you help choose photographs and clothing colors for marketing campaigns. And, as an Interior Design Assistant, you might create a fabric and flooring display board for customers.
