Database Developer

As a Database Developer, you create and organize the files on a company’s computer network so that employees can easily access the information they need to do their jobs. And because most businesses continually add information and new features to their databases, Database Developers also modify files, and design security features to protect the company’s information.

Since Database Developers build customized databases, they have to speak two languages—that of the computer and that of people. You work with non-technical staff to find out how they will use a new set of information, and then create easy-to-use and functional files. You also maintain databases and build protective systems to secure the information.

When you write new computer programs, you also write the user manuals and help screens, plus train users on how to operate the system. Sometimes, you have to modify programs to make them more user-friendly, which means rewriting the manuals and help screens, too. While understanding computers is easy for you, understanding how users interact with them might not be quite as simple.
