A data warehouse isn’t a physical building containing masses of paper. Instead, it’s a computer system used to store many pieces of electronic data. As a Data Warehousing Manager, you supervise a team of people who sort and organize that data and transform it into usable information.

Data Warehousing Managers likely work with a computer system that’s been designed by someone else. An expert on this system, the Data Warehousing Manager trains new employees on how to use it, helps them when they struggle with it, and encourages them to take breaks rather than hollering at their computer monitors.

Your team likely spends the day running reports that put together certain pieces of data in interesting ways. Some of these reports are new. Others are reports your team runs on a periodic basis. Either way, you look over each report before it leaves your department.

You make sure that your data warehouse is duplicated periodically, just in case the system fails. If information is lost, you’ll be held accountable, so you do everything possible to make sure not even the smallest piece of data ever goes missing.

You also read reports and consumer reviews about new data warehouse systems in hopes of finding a new system that may be a good fit for your company. If you find one, you test the new system extensively, and if you like it, you write a purchase order and give it to senior management. As soon as the new system is in place, you prepare to teach your employees about it, stocking up on bribes of candy and popcorn to help them stay motivated and positive.
