Cupcake Shop Owner: Inside Jobs

With shows like Cupcake Wars and DC Cupcakes sweetening television viewing, cupcakes are bigger than ever. What was once considered a homemade treat for a child’s birthday party is now an artistic and flavorful creation suitable for catered events. And no one knows more about cupcakes than a Cupcake Shop Owner.

A Cupcake Shop Owner, you wears an assortment of hats. Of course, you have the classic Chef ’s hat, which, more technically, would be considered a Baker ’s hat.

As a Cupcake Shop Owner, you and your staff whip up trays of cupcakes each morning for your customers’ consumption. What’s your best seller? Is it classic chocolate? White truffle macadamia nut?

Depending on the size of your business, you may have to stack one hat on top of another. Sometimes, you have a staff to do the baking, and you don the Supervisor ’s hat. In addition to hiring, firing, disciplining, encouraging, mentoring, training, interviewing, and evaluating your Kitchen Helpers, you make the schedules and keep tabs on supply levels.

When you’re not busy making sure everyone showed up for work and you haven’t run out of flour, you pop on the Manager ’s hat and place orders, pay bills, deal with maintenance issues, plan promotions, approve advertising, and sign vendor contracts. You also ensure that orders are ready and delivered on schedule.

If that doesn’t keep you busy enough, you can always sneak back into the Baker’s hat and create a new recipe for lemon crème pie or pomegranate martini cupcakes.
