An Event Planner is the Puppet Master behind the scenes of events like concerts, festivals, weddings, and large-scale meetings. A Corporate Event Planner does the same thing, but coordinates, orchestrates, and otherwise ‘puts on’ events that their corporation sponsors.
Obviously, your tasks as a Corporate Event Planner could vary wildly from day-to-day and from event-to-event. A formal dinner is going to require different components than, say, a charity concert fundraiser. But though the subject matter will vary, the skill set will remain the same.
In particular, you’ll need to do two things and do them very, very well: communicate and organize. You’ll have your fingers on several pulses at once as you coordinate the people responsible for each facet of your event (food, entertainment, production, etc.), and you’ll need to be personable enough to get them all in synch with your event. Plus, given that all the events you throw represent your company, you need to make sure that standards are held high and nothing goes wrong.
A good example of this is in the movie “Step Brothers” when Will Ferrell puts on the Catalina Wine Mixer. He is responsible for booking a band, securing permits for the event space, coordinating with Caterers to provide food and wine, and for creating and enforcing an appropriate guest list. So if you want to be a good Corporate Event Planner, then think like Will Ferrell.
