College Recruiter

College Recruiters convince high school and community college students to get their advanced degrees from the college or university that they represent. College Recruiters often travel to various career fairs and meet with a wide range of students. Sometimes, they search locally and recruit the most talented students from their own neighborhoods, while other times, they travel across the country to meet with the best and brightest high school graduates in the nation.

If you’re a College Recruiter, you’re an extremely outgoing person who loves doing your research. Your job is a cross between a Headhunter and a Cheerleader. First, you have to find the top students in your state and the nation, whose strengths will be a match for your college’s programs. To do this, you call a variety of high schools, and analyze data like SAT scores, grade point averages, and athletic abilities to determine which students will be the best fit.

Then, you must pump up your school’s top attributes (from competitive athletic programs to award-winning academic departments) to show those students why getting a degree from your school will benefit them in the future.

Though much of your work requires attending career fairs and other networking events, there are plenty of things for you to do in your office too. College Recruiters are often responsible for putting together brochures, press releases, fliers, and other communications materials that will be sent to prospective students to get them interested in the university and its programs. For this reason, excellent writing and speaking skills are necessary to propel you to success in this job.
