Good concrete laying is an art. After all, smooth sidewalks and decorative patios don’t pour themselves. Cement Masons create pieces of concrete perfection on jobs ranging from the construction of a new highway to the erection of home walls.

Though it might seem confusing, the job of a Cement Mason doesn’t start with concrete but with a piece of wood. Make that multiple pieces of wood, since these make up the frames used to pour cement. As a Cement Mason, you talk with your client first so you can figure out exactly what they want, and then create and lay out the necessary frames in the specific size, shape, and width for the job.

Once the frame is ready, you pour the concrete. Depending on the type of business you work for and the size of the job, you might mix the concrete yourself or let the supplier do it. After the concrete has been poured, you get to work and quickly spread, level, and smooth out the cement. You and your workers need to move fast because cement doesn’t take a lot of time to harden.

For some jobs, like in the case of patios or stairs, you might be in charge of doing decorative finishing work as well. You can do anything from giving the area some texture to adding color to the cement. No matter what type of job you’re doing though, you always keep an eye on the elements, making sure it’s not too cold, windy, or rainy to pour the cement well.
