The purpose of cell phone towers is to give users cell service wherever they go. The job of a Cell Tower Technician is to take care of those towers. Cell Tower Technicians put up new ones and maintain old ones to ensure that their company’s customers have full bars of service at all times.

The first thing you should know about being a Cell Tower Technician is that cell phone towers are tall—as in 200 to 500 feet tall! So if you have a paralyzing fear of heights, you probably shouldn’t get into this line of work. In fact, unless you really love heights, you might want to think hard about this job.

In this position, your office is found suspended in midair. Since climbing up, say, 400 feet takes a while, you don’t come down until the job is done. And a job might take you a few hours, or it might take you all day.

The other thing to be aware of is nothing makes cold weather colder than being 300 feet off the ground. Chilly weather and wind are the two biggest things Technicians who are already in this job say they dislike about their positions.

So what exactly do you do up in the air? You replace broken or worn-out parts like antennas or light bulbs, paint the towers, or string cables. You can also help build the towers from the ground up, slowly putting them together piece by piece, bolt by bolt.
