Bomb Squad Technician
Help investigate and disarm explosives.
Bomb Squad Technicians are specialized Law Enforcement Officers who disarm bombs before they detonate. These bombs are usually used by criminals who want to hurt people, damage property, or break into high security areas. Through stopping bombs you save a lot of lives.
No matter what the movies say, being a Bomb Squad Technician takes a lot more than knowing whether to cut the red wire or the blue wire. A big part of your training includes learning how to stay calm in high-pressure situations. So if you’re already cool-headed and have the desire to protect others, you’ll be one step ahead.
As technology advances, so does bomb construction. You need to be mechanically savvy and dedicated to continuing your technical education. Using equipment such as specialized bomb suits, x-ray, and special breathing apparatuses, you’re able to go into a sticky situation and diffuse a ticking time bomb. You also conduct post-bomb investigations, and develop emergency procedures that citizens can follow in case of a bomb threat.
Luckily, you don’t have to go it alone when you’re on the job. Bomb squads consist of a Lieutenant, a Sergeant, and multiple Detectives. Together with them, as well as other Bomb Squad Technicians, you make decisions on how to approach potential threats. Many police departments also use bomb-sniffing dogs that help detect all the bombs in an area. Increasingly, robots equipped with cameras are being used to disarm bombs. You operate them remotely so you can reach bombs in tight spaces, or handle suspicious packages from a safe distance.
