Biomedical Equipment Technicians care for medical equipment and instruments. More specifically, the duties of Biomedical Equipment Technicians are to install, inspect, calibrate, modify, test, and repair the equipment. In order to do all of that, they constantly refer to blueprints and handbooks, and use other tools to care for the instruments. And because, as a Biomedical Equipment Technician, you know all of that machinery so well, you occasionally get to train other medical personnel on how to operate it (and hopefully, you’ll be clearer than one of Ikea’s assembly manuals).

Your job may be stressful, especially if you work in a large hospital and there’s a lot of equipment to look after. But you also have help when you need to dismantle or reassemble a large piece of machinery. Besides, it’s fun for a person who likes technical work, equipment, tools, and the kind of precise instruments found in the medical field. You might even get to flex your creative muscles and add to or change the original components of a machine in order to tailor it to your hospital’s specific need.

But a hospital or clinic isn’t the only place where you can find a job. Many Biomedical Equipment Technicians choose to work for manufacturers of medical equipment, doing the same work but in a factory setting. In a manufacturing company, you could also work within the sales or service departments.
