You’ve been a music lover since before you could walk, let alone shake a tambourine, strum a guitar or beat a drum. But you’re different because you’re also a techie. You want to know how albums are made and what all those knobs and switches do in a recording studio. You dream of being the person behind the scenes and behind the glass, putting together your favorite Recording Artist next great album. But you can’t land that gig right out of the gate. You’ve got to start somewhere and that somewhere is as an Audio Production Assistant in a music studio.

The Audio Production Assistant is the Music Producer ’s go-to person. When the Producer needs phones manned and emails answered, if you’re the Audio Production Assistant he or she will call on you. When the Producer needs to contact extra Backup Vocalists or Session Musicians, he or she will call on you. When the Producer needs equipment set up and broken down, he or she will call on you.

So what do you gain from all this work? There’s a lot that goes into producing an album – from supervisory and budget duties to handling being the creative lead. You’ll get to see all the tough decisions made first hand, gain a sense of how the Producer guides a band, and see a track morph as it goes through recording, editing, mixing and mastering. And when it comes time to record, the Producer will call on you to help make the record, giving you hands-on experience to complement your increased industry knowledge.
