An Attaché is someone who’s assigned—or “attached”—to another person, basically functioning as a team member in a support staff. The term most commonly refers to someone working in an official capacity, usually in politics or perhaps in the military.

If you’re an Attaché, you act as the “technical expert on a country’s diplomatic staff at a foreign capital,” according to the Merriam-Webster dictionary. However, the word’s usage, and the job that goes with it, have spread to many other fields, including cultural, labor, legal, press, and science, to name just a few. This means your work as an Attaché can lead you anywhere, into just about any field.

On a daily basis, you may conduct research for whichever field you’re working in, whether the research has been assigned to you by the person you work for, or you feel you need it to be able to do your job. You also do a lot of planning: You plan out your employer’s agenda (as well as your own), all of their major meetings, and the appropriate arrangements for those meetings. Additionally, you schedule conferences, travel, and assist with just about anything the person you work for may need to do.

The last aspect of your job, and arguably the most important, is image. Having a good, strong public image is the cornerstone of the work that you do. You must, of course, have a thorough knowledge of the field you’re in. But it is when you’re given the opportunity to act as a representative of your business—and those times will come—that you’ll actually get to flex those muscles and act as the model Attaché.
