Admissions Officer

Admissions Officers are the gatekeepers of a college. With the piles and piles of applications colleges receive every year, they need an Admissions Officer to sort through the clutter and choose the best students for the school.

How do you make an informed decision? As an Admissions Officer, your day-to-day duties consist of reviewing transcripts, reading students’ college essays, and considering their personal interests. Based on this information, you decide which students to follow up with.

When deciding if a student is the right fit for your school, you also determine if your school is the right fit for a student. An applicant named Mallory may dream of becoming a Fashion Designer, but your school focuses more on business-related degrees. You let her know that she’ll be happier at a more fashion-friendly institution.

On the days when you’re not reviewing applications, you visit high schools to promote your college. This is the time to trade in your Detective cap for a Salesman suit. You highlight your school’s assets – such as that newly built science lab – and walk students through the application process.

Then it’s back to the office to review those applications. Your job brings you full circle from finding new applicants to deciding if those applicants make the final cut. Think of your college as a lovely flower arrangement. While there are plenty of beautiful flowers in the world – your potential students in this case – you can only choose a few to add to your bright bouquet.
