Each day, a manufacturing company sends 30 pens through the production line. In order to cut costs, the company needs to make 35 pens per day instead. Increasing output means examining the way the pens are made, and how long each step takes. It’s a question for an Engineer and a Statistician.
Thankfully, the company can hire just one person to do the work of two. That person is a Statistical Engineer. The work the Statistical Engineer does blends theories common to engineering and statistics, allowing the company to come up with one elegant answer!
When you’re a Statistical Engineer, the Production Manager or company President provides you with issues they need solved. Perhaps one single production line needs to be tweaked, or perhaps the entire company needs to be overhauled to help save money.
When you’ve formulated a specific goal, you develop a series of experiments. Using sophisticated computer software, you analyze production times, employee payments, wasted time, equipment downtime, and more, and you look for ways to improve efficiency. The computer models allow you to test quality, speed, or efficiency, and you build a series of solutions based on your model reports.
When your research is done, you craft a report that outlines everything you’ve found. Adding charts and visuals helps ensure that you’re explaining the data properly. This report moves to the Production Manager or company President for review. If your ideas are accepted, you may help write training manuals for the people who work in the warehouse, explaining how the new procedure is superior.
