Seed Analysts support Agricultural Scientists in their quest to improve and increase crop yield. Seed Analysts generally work in a laboratory, where they assist Food Scientists with food and fiber research, as well as the production and processing aspects of agriculture. As a Seed Analyst, you think of everything, from harvesting and production to processing and packaging to distribution and personal use, all with a keen eye turned towards quality control.
Your primary job within this system is to collect samples of seeds and fibers, and analyze them closely. You don’t just stick them under a microscope, though. Instead, you put the samples through various experiments that will test their structure. When you get your results, you record the data carefully and report back to your superiors, who will then use that data for their articles and research.
Your other tasks within the lab include caring for and maintaining lab equipment and samples. You keep everything clean, organized, and properly labeled, and also prepare microscopic slides for the researchers’ use.
The real-life application of your work is perhaps the most interesting and exciting part. Breakthroughs in this field can lead to the holy grail of crops. A Seed Analyst’s wish list would include a seed variety that can be grown in every kind of weather condition, season, and climate, as well as show resistance to insects and disease. Something that flourishes without any pesticides and fertilizers, and grows to its fullest potential with the utmost quality in texture and taste would be ideal.
