What do Process Servers do?

As a Process Server, you act as a liaison or Messenger between Attorneys, the court, and people who are involved in court cases. The actions and duties of a Process Server are vital to the judicial process. Delivering court orders such as subpoenas and summonses from Attorneys and the court may just be the thing that gets the ball rolling straight towards justice.

Patience is critical in this role. For example, an individual who knows about a pending lawsuit may not want to accept delivery of the court documents. Instead, they may choose to play a game of hide-and-seek. Process Servers must be patient and wait for an opportunity to serve the papers.

To find the intended recipient, you put your investigation skills to work. Using information from telephone listings, Internet resources, tax records, and other sources, you identify other possible locations when the recipient isn’t found in their own residence.

It’s essential to remain calm and collected while doing your job as tempers may rise (who wants to be sued?) when you attempt to deliver the court documents. A thorough understanding of the legal process is crucial to being a Process Server because any mistakes in service may be grounds for dismissal of the case.

The changing environment, the thrill of the chase, and the chance to play a role in serving justice all make this position exciting for thrill-seekers everywhere.
