What do Politicians do?

When Mahatma Gandhi said, “Be the change you want to see in the world,” he must have been talking to Politicians. After all, Politicians are change-makers. Equal parts influencer and Ambassador, a Politician is hired by citizens who vote for them, or by fellow Politicians who appoint them. Either way, their job is to democratically represent people in local, state, or federal government, either by leading or legislating.

If you’re a Politician who leads, you might be President Of The United States, Governor, or Mayor. The Chief Executive Officer for a city, state, or nation — or for a government agency, department, or body — you set agendas, hire personnel, create budgets, and solve problems. If you legislate, on the other hand, you might be a Senator, Congressperson, or City Council Member. As a Policymaker, you pass laws by creating and voting on bills that establish rules and regulations.

Leader or Legislator, you’re found in both small towns and big cities, in school boards, city councils, state legislatures, the U.S. Congress, and, of course, the White House. Here or there, you typically divide your time between seeking political office — campaigning for votes, making speeches, and debating political opponents — and holding it: governing, managing, and regulating.

It’s hard work, to be sure. But it’s also good work, as you’re like a Welder: Armed with the tools of your trade, you have the unique ability to bend the seemingly unbendable in order to effect positive change in the world around you.
