What do Outside Barrel-Lathe Operators do?

Operates machine to scrape and smooth outer surface of barrel by holding handtools against barrel: Removes temporary hoops from barrel and places barrel horizontally on barrel rest. Starts machine. Clamps barrel between chucks of lathe. Holds barrel plane against surface of revolving barrel and guides tool along length of barrel to scrape and smooth barrel. Lifts tool from surface of barrel, releases pressure of tail chuck on barrel, and lifts barrel from machine.
