As a Nutrition Epidemiology Scientist, you work in hospitals, nutrition centers, research facilities, and food manufacturing companies, using your investigatory skills to find answers. With your science-heavy background, you work closely with Engineers, Nutritionists, Dietitians, and Physicians. You all work together to find the cause-and-effect relationships present with each disease, as well as solutions to the problem.
Courses in epidemiology, biology, health, nutrition, and chemistry prepare you for work in a laboratory or the field. For example, you’re employed by a research company that wants to know why 75 percent of the population of Smithville lacks vitamin C, leading to scurvy. Evaluating the dietary habits of the Smithville population, you then determine that a lack of oranges and orange juice has led to the problem. After evaluating your data, you find that the best way to combat the problem — and the scurvy — is by providing more oranges, orange juice, and other vitamin C-rich fruits and vegetables.
Excellent communication and analytical skills are required, and you should know your way around a computer as well.
