A Music Composer is a person who creates music, and writes down notes and rhythms to turn sounds into the songs people love. But if the word Composer makes you think of Beethoven or another old guy in a powdered wig writing music for operas, think again. Televisions shows, movies, pop music and advertisements all use Music Composers.
In an advertising firm you’ll write short songs (known as jingles) to get consumers to buy different products. These jingles might include the name of the certain item, like Double Mint Gum, or just sounds, like with Meow Mix. Either way, you want your jingle to be catchy and stay in a consumer’s head when they go shopping.
If you want to write something a little less peppy work in TV and movies. Here you’ll write background music to give a show its verbal cues. A Music Composer created the Jaws theme and they’re the ones who create the romantic violins that swell at the end of every romantic comedy.
You might also get a job helping to write some of the pop music heard on the radio. As shocking as it might be, most Recording Artists don’t write their own music and instead rely on the creations of Composers and Songwriters to get their number one hits.
Most composition work is founding LA, New York or Nashville, so be prepared to move to one of these areas if you really want to make it big.
