What do Mud Logging Analysts do?

In drilling operations, mud performs an important role: It tells a story. And it’s a story that Mud Logging Analysts want to read. To dig into the plot, Mud Logging Analysts collect soil samples from drilling wells, and look for information about the chemical and water make-up of the mud, whether it contains oil or gas, and what the temperature is at different depths.

As a Mud Logging Analyst, you spend plenty of time rooting in the mud, so you’re prepared for all weather conditions. In fact, you get used to fairly rough living conditions. After all, oil drilling doesn’t take place inside a four-star hotel.

But whether the well is located in the middle of the ocean or Timbuktu, you have a portable lab that allows you to run tests without leaving your muddy boots at the door. Those tests include scanning samples with ultraviolet light and making examinations under a microscope.

What are you looking for? In short, anything that the Mud Engineers, Rig Managers, and others involved in the operation need to know.

For example, the samples you gather before drilling begins help determine the presence of oil and natural gas. That way, you’re able to target a dig site. In addition, you track information about dangerous pressure levels and other concerns, which keeps the Oil Rig Drillers safe.
