What do Kiln Operators do?

Tends battery of rotary kilns that heat minerals, such as lime, chrome ore, and manganese, preparatory to mixing minerals with molten metal to form steel: Signals OVERHEAD CRANE OPERATOR 921.663-010 to deliver specified type and amount of material to kiln feedbox. Pushes switches to start kiln rotating and conveyors feeding materials from feedbox to kiln. Ignites burners under kiln and moves controls to attain specified temperature in kiln. Pulls lever to dump heated material into steel box on platform scale. Weighs and records weight, type, and amount of material heated.
