What do House Sitters do?

When homeowners head out for an extended vacation or a business trip halfway across the country, they hire a House Sitter to clean the house, pay the bills, and care for pets — whether it’s a hyperactive, teething puppy or simply a perky, potted fern.

As a House Sitter, you have many of the same responsibilities as a Babysitter, only without the dirty diapers or spit-up. Houses need care just like a child. Regular cleaning keeps stray cobwebs at bay.

Depending on the homeowner’s needs, a House Sitter may stop by daily to bring in the mail, or temporarily move into the home — rent-free, of course. Though it’s a nice way to save money and see new sights, you must first and foremost dedicate your time to housekeeping.

Don’t worry, though; you won’t spend all your time armed with a duster. Once the house is spotless, you turn into a Secretary, paying bills, forwarding important messages to the homeowner, and calling Repairmen if the washer springs a leak or the plumbing goes on the fritz.

The job offers many perks for both you and the homeowner. You maintain a clean house and deter would-be burglars, and in exchange, can spend weeks in a new location. If you’re an animal person, you’ll love meeting new furry faces waiting to curl up in your lap and watch TV or play a game of catch in the backyard. It’s a win-win situation for everyone!
