What do Hospitality Managers do?

As Hospitality Manger, it’s your responsibility to manage all aspects of your place of employ (most of the time a hotel or resort) affecting the comfort and satisfaction of the customers. You need to make sure everything from the towels to the tiki bar are in tip top shape.

This means there is a lot of breadth for your job responsibilities: You might be hiring wait staff one day and the next day you’re catering to a high-roller making sure she has the correct thread count in her sheets. You’re the big cheese on the property, ensuring guests are happy and comfortable for their stay.

This may seem daunting, but rest assured, the larger the resort, the more Hospitality Managers there are. In fact, there are many different levels of experience and expertise within the position of Hospitality Managers. At a larger resort – like Turtle Bay in Hawaii, for example – there are separate Hospitality Managers for the beach, for each pool space, for restaurants, for day activities, and so forth.

Whatever the area, though, your main goal remains the same: Do whatever you can to make sure the guests stay happy. This involves managing your staff and smiling with ease as grace while you silently juggle all sorts of things behind the scenes. In compensation for your competence you get to live in an environment of beauty and luxury, and business will boom as your guests spread the word on the sterling service.

Should I be a Hospitality Manager?

You should have a certificate degree or higher and share these traits:
  • Team Player: You're able to listen, communicate, and work with tons of different people.
  • Levelheaded: You hold your emotions in check, even in tough situations.
  • Calm Under Pressure: You keep your cool when dealing with highly stressful situations.
