Direct a company’s daily affairs as its second-in-command.
As a Gender Studies Professor, you lead students in exploring the complex issues surrounding gender roles in various societies throughout history and into the future. A complex, interdisciplinary subject, gender studies encompasses a broad range of topics, and uses art, literature, music, audio and video recordings, and firsthand interviews to flesh out fully realized experiences of the ways different groups treat the idea of gender. Often incorporating (or at least touching on) women’s studies, a Gender Studies Professor can choose to specialize in a particular period of time or part of the world, or you can be as broad as you like.
Like all Professors, you spend your workdays in a variety of ways. Of course, there’s time spent in the classroom giving lectures, but the job of a Gender Studies Professor goes way past that.
Writing articles that promote your academic ideas is a key part of your routine work. You do original research to fuel these pieces, and also have Research Assistants to help out. Teaching Assistants, meanwhile, help you with some of your classroom duties, as well as grading papers and such.
The academic lifestyle makes quantifying a workweek in terms of hours very difficult. Between the classroom, research, writing, guest lectures and extra presentations, board meetings, and social functions, expect a packed life. However, if gender studies is a field which you feel really passionate about, and you want to make a meaningful, lasting contribution to it and to the lives of all the students you come into contact with, then this could be the ideal career path for you.
