What do Fuel Cell Systems Engineers do?

Fuel cell systems are an amazing modern invention that has changed the way we use the toaster, drive our cars, and power submarines. That’s because these systems have the potential to provide power to anything that needs it. Recreational vehicles, vacation homes off the standard electrical grid, and spacecraft are a few more examples of fuel cell system consumers.

A Fuel Cell Systems Engineer designs and redesigns the systems that do this work. The job of a Fuel Cell Systems Engineer requires a love of physics, science, and math, not to mention an acute understanding of computer software programs (CAD, for example). But when you’re a Fuel Cell Systems Engineer, the time you’ll spend studying those subjects is a small price to pay for the opportunity to develop a system that powers an entire city park, or a backup energy system for when the local hospital loses power.

This isn’t a job you do alone. You work with a team of Designers, Engineers, and Technicians to brainstorm ideas, experiment with new theories, test prototypes, and implement never-before-used systems.

From the system used to power cars to the one that provides juice to the remotest weather station, your team starts with nothing more than a goal. Through hard work, the laws of science, and strong financial backing, there’s no end to the uses for fuel cell technology, and you’re part of it all.

Should I be a Fuel Cell Systems Engineer?

You should have a bachelor's degree or higher and share these traits:
  • Detail Oriented: You pay close attention to all the little details.
  • Team Player: You're able to listen, communicate, and work with tons of different people.
  • Persistent: You keep pushing through, even when faced with tough obstacles.
