What do Courtesy Clerks do?

A Courtesy Clerk works in a grocery store, and is more commonly known as a Bagger. The Courtesy Clerk is the person who asks shoppers if they want paper or plastic, who packs up their purchases, and who helps them out to their car.

The main responsibility of your job as Courtesy Clerk is customer service. But this means more than just carrying grocery bags for shoppers. You also help to make sure shelves are full by restocking products. And you’re the one who directs shoppers to the right aisle when they can’t find their favorite cereal. The exact responsibilities for this job will vary depending on the size of the grocery store. But in the end, the most important part of your job is to make sure the customer is happy. That, and their eggs don’t end up smashed because you packed them at the bottom of a heavy bag.

Most people hired for this job are high school students, or people who’ve been out of work for years and are looking for a way to ease back into the workforce. You can use this job as a stepping stone to a higher position, whether that’s as a Checker or, further down the road, a Store Manager.

Should I be a Courtesy Clerk?

You should have a high school degree or higher and share these traits:
  • Reliable: You can always be counted on to do a good job.
  • Team Player: You're able to listen, communicate, and work with tons of different people.
  • Levelheaded: You hold your emotions in check, even in tough situations.

  • Also known as: Bagger, Grocery Bagger, Grocery Store Bagger
