Casino Pit Boss. That’s just a cool title, don’t you think? A Casino Pit Boss is in charge of the employees, customers, games, and money flow in the “pit”—the area in the casino where the gaming tables are located.
Casinos are designed for fun. But while customers enjoy the flashing lights, ringing bells, and bubbly cocktails, you’re focused on work. Your main task? Supervising the Dealers to make sure each game is fair and played according to Gaming Commission guidelines.
Away from the tables, you monitor the Cashiers and observe the conversion of chips into cash. You answer questions, handle computer issues, and ensure that the Cashiers get a break. In addition to Dealers and Cashiers, you work with the waiting staff, Maintenance Workers, and Security Guards.
It’s also your job to ensure that the customers follow the rules. While you want them to have a good time, you also need to make sure they’re not underage. You watch for problematic behavior such as cheating, excessive intoxication, or fighting. On a more positive note, you also have the power to “comp” them with extras, such as hotel rooms, gambling money, or meals.
Somewhere in the midst of all this activity, you also hire, evaluate, and fire employees, process vacation and scheduling requests, monitor the payroll process, and supervise training for new employees or new games.
Without a Casino Pit Boss, a casino could turn into a chaotic mess in ten seconds flat. Managing so many people and processes is a lot of responsibility. But then again, that’s what being the “Boss” is all about.
