A Café Attendant should be ready to prepare food, serve it to customers, and clean up afterwards. The hours a Café Attendant works may vary, but the lively interaction with customers will not. No matter what shift you work, if you are a Café Attendant you are likely to develop regular customers with whom friendships are formed.
Depending on the size of the cafeteria or coffee shop, you may be responsible for everything from cooking the food to clearing the dishes. Honing your customer service skills is essential for this position, as part of your earnings come in the form of tips. Being friendly, outgoing, and energetic are the keys to success.
Attention to detail is important for preparing customer bills and collecting payments. It’s not uncommon to be standing and walking for an entire shift, but the fast pace of the job makes the time sail by. Upper body strength is an added benefit because it makes carrying dishes (both full and empty) a breeze, and helps for rearranging tables and chairs to accommodate large parties.
In some situations, working as a Café Attendant is required for advancement to other positions such as Server or Host. After spending time in this position, you may decide the restaurant environment is exactly the career path you desire.
