What do Anatomy Professors do?

Anatomy Professors teach their students about the structure of living things. Their focus is usually on human anatomical form and function, but there are a variety of subspecialties you can study and teach, such as biological imaging, cell biology, genetics, molecular development, endocrinology, histology, neuroscience, forensics, microscopy, and physical anthropology. Depending on a particular Anatomy Professor’s specialty, their time will be split between the classroom and laboratory.

As an Anatomy Professor, you should have a passion for teaching, and for biology and anatomy in particular. It’s important to be inventive and imaginative as well, as the rote memorization of anatomy parts and systems can be tedious and difficult for students. Make it fun for your class to learn about anatomy. The more you do, the easier it will be for them to retain that knowledge.

During summers and on your downtime from teaching, it’s not uncommon for you to do biomedical research, and write reports and journal articles on your findings. Because anatomy research is integral to medicine, the discoveries in this category can lead to huge developments for artificial organs and plastic surgery procedures. And even if you yourself are not working in the labs of these research centers, you’re teaching your students the skills that can get them there. Therefore, their success is your success.
